Basic Profile
Zidane is the main hero of the story. At the beginning of the game he is shown as a member of a group of thieves/actors named Tantalus. This group comes from the large city of Lindblum to Alexandria at the beginning of the game in order to kidnap the Princess of Alexandria, Garnet. However, in order to do this, the group masks their plans by putting on a play for the people of the city - I Want to be Your Canary. This play is very popular with the nobles of the world, therefor it was the perfect play to cover up their act.
Zidane plays one of the roles in the play, however, during the middle of it, him and one of his friends in the group - Blank - sneak into the castle in order to kidnap the Princess. When inside, Zidane comes across the fair Princess quite quickly and she runs past him. Zidane quickly chases after her and eventually learns that she wants to be kidnapped. Queen Brahn of Alexandria, the mother of Princess Garnet, catches on and tries to shoot down the theatre ship. She succeeds, however, the group gets lost in the evil forest, where they must make their way out.
So, the story follows Zidane, Garnet, and the rest of the gang as they travel together. As Zidane goes, he's trying to find his place in the world and where he came from, his only clue being a "blue light."
 
Personality
Zidane is flirty. He loves to flirt with ladies he finds "attractive." He's also very cheerful and happy. He's cheerful no matter what the situation and tries to keep things lighthearted. He's easy-going and laid-back, very easy to get along with and doesn't judge people. He's very kind-hearted and willing to help those in need, especially those that have no means to fight back. Zidane does have a strong sense of justice behind his cheerful personality.
Possibly Spoiling Information
Zidane is of a strange race, that of Genome. Genomes are beings said to have no soul, however, Zidane is special. He was given a soul. There is only one other Genome that was given a soul, that being no other than Kuja.
Zidane did not grow up in Gaia, but rather, in a strange world known as Terra that is connected to Gaia. In Terra there is basically nothing but souless Genome roaming about. These Genome were created by a man by the name of Garland. Garland gave both Zidane and Kuja souls in order to fulfill his own selfish wishes of conquering Gaia.
Kuja was born first and was fulfilling Garland's wishes quite well, however, Garland did not think Kuja had adequet power, therefor he created Zidane and gave him a soul. Yes, Zidane had much more potential than Kuja did. That did make Kuja angry, therefor, when Zidane was just a child Kuja dumped him on Gaia, hopefully ridding him and preventing Zidane from taking his place.
So, Zidane grew up in Gaia. He was found by Baku, who took him in and made him a part of his group. Baku was quite strict but he did love Zidane like his own child.
During the game, Zidane learns of Terra and his orgin and is quite frightened by it. He meets the souless Genomes and learns that him and Kuja are of the same orgin. At the end of the game, Zidane and party do defeat Kuja and the absolute creator, however, Zidane can't help but feel sadness for Kuja as his "brother" is dying, therefor he stays behind at the Iifa tree in order to keep Kuja company as he passes away. The rest of the party goes away, leaving Zidane behind with Kuja.
