Game Information

Valkyrie Profile is one of those games on the Playstation that most gamers can only dream of owning. A limited number of copies of the game were produced back in the day, so buying this game could be a very expensive investment. It wasn't a hit, nor was it a total flop, but in those days, most gamers who played RPG's didn't really divert off of the Final Fantasy road. Though expensive to buy on the original playstation, gamers with the PSP do have the option of purchasing it that way.

So, what does the original Valkyrie Profile have to do with this game? Not much, that's for sure, but you will see a few familiar faces [well, possibly] on your journey through Midgard in this game. The star of the previous game, Lenneth Valkyrie, does make an apperance in the game, but not until it is almost complete. The battle system is nearly the same, though, the whole system is totally different in every other way. The original was a non-linear game where players would send einherjar [ spirits of soldiers that died bravely in battle ] to Valhalla [ the realm of the God - Odin ] to fight in the end of time war, Ragnarok. Silmeria is different in that this is a linear adventure about Alicia, a princess who has the spirit of a Valkyrie dwelling inside of her. The gamer has several main characters, though, the option of obtaining einherjar is still there, but it is quite different this time around. You won't send them to Valhalla to fight in a war, but instead you can train them to a certain level and release their souls to the world of the living again and obtain items that will greatly increase a character's stats in return for it. If you meet them in the world you'll also get extra items.

This game, if nothing else, is very aesthetically pleasing. The backgrounds are gorgeous as well as the character designs. The lighting is perfect and almost surreal in some areas. So much so that it may make you gasp in awe when you first see these wonderous sights. It is most definitely one of the most beautiful games on the Playstation 2.

Surprisingly, the voice acting is quite good in this game. It seems that games, especially those by Square-Enix, are starting to get smart about their casting of voice actors. The voice actor for Rufus, especially, is quite fitting for the character.

Along with beautiful, another term comes in mind when thinking about this game: Difficult. If you do not level and plan properly, you'll find your entire party being KO'd in random battles just at the second area in the game! Battles are basically a button-mashing fest. Sound boring? No, it is not. Though it may sound dull, the battle system in this game is incredibly fun and fast-pased partcially beccause it is so challenging. Players can take up to four characters into battle, each one set to their own button. A bar at the bottom of the screen shows how many attacks a party can perform before they must rest or move around some more. In order to attack, the party must run up to an enemy, and the player will need to hit one of the corresponding buttons to character to start an attack. Thus, the button-mashing fun begins. Truth be told, there is more to it than this. You can dash, use magic, and skills. Heck, against one boss using ice magic with Lezard works out as the best, so it does involve some strategy.

Is this game worth playing? Yes! Most any RPG fan should enjoy this game. With the unique battle system, beautiful graphics, good voice acting, and enjoyable story and cast of characters, it's a game most would want to have in their collection.
