Texture Tutorial
This tutorial is different than the light texture tutorial as this is teaching you how to make regular 'ol textures in photoshop. This is just one of many techniques that you can use to make these sort of textures. The good thing is that you can use this tutorial as a base for many things. It works as a wallpaper background, a base to crop 100x100 textures from, or something you can use the make layouts, such as how I did to make the Princess Natalia layout in the free layouts section. Whatever the case, it is up to you.
Remember to be creative. Don't let these filters be the only things you try out. Once you grasp the basic concept ... expirement! The only limit to the things you can create is your imagination!
The tutorial
1. Open a new document. I recommend it being at least 1024x768 pixels in size. Also make sure the background is white, #ffffff.
2. Create a new layer. Select the rectangular marquee tool. Create a square on your document like below. Make sure to also color it in. I use color #e4e0cb.
Step 2 Example
3. Now, once again, use the rectangluar marquee tool to make another square or rectangle shape. Have it overlap the first square you made. You'll want to fill it again, with the same color, but do so on a new layer.
4. On this layer that the second square is filled on, you'll want to right click the layer and go to blending options. See the opacity bar? Lower this abit to your liking, such as below.
Step 4 Example
5. Simple so far, right? Well, you'll want to repeat step 4 many times until your whole canvas is covered, or nearly all of it, like below. Remember, if you are tired of using squares and rectangles, you can always go to use the elliptical tool to make circles instead.
Step 5 Example
6. Create a new layer. Hit D on your keyboard, then head to filter > render > clouds. Set this layer's blend mode to overlay.
7. Create another new layer. Now, select a rounded brush from your brush menu. You'll also want to select what colors you'll want your final texture to be. I recommend selecting two different colors. You'll then want to go over the entire area with many different shades of the two colors you chose in order to provide some contrast. Do something like I did below.
Step 7 Example
7. Go to filter >blur > gaussain blur. Set radius : 34.5 Then set this layer's blending mode to color.
8. Now, make a new layer and use the rectangular tool to make long, think, white rectangles all over the canvas. Lower the opacity until you have something you like such as below. This step is just used to add a little more depth. If you want, you Can skip it.
Step 8 Example
9. Go to layer > merge visible and flaten your layer. Once this is done duplicate the layer. On the top layer go to image > adjustments > auto contrast. You'll want to go to the blending optionsmoade of this top layer and set the opacity to 50.
10. For this step, pick out an image you like from a free stock site, such as SXC.HU. These sites have images that designers are free to use in their graphics. I used This image.
Copy this image and paste it onto your texture document. Go to edit > transform > scale to make it the size of your entire document. Set its blending mode to soft light.
Step 10 Example
11. Create one last layer. On this layer select a deep color that matches your texture. With this, use some of your favorite photoshop brushes. Don't have any brushes? Just browse deviantart.com for some. Remember splatters and such work quite well. When you are done, set the blending mode to Overlay.
Step 11 Example
...
That's it! Pretty simple! With a bit of tweaking, you can create something really great. If you're an icon maker, remember to just crop and save 100x100 sections of the texture to make your own texture set. Examples of this are below
